VISA Surcharge Statement

If you have noticed, businesses in the US and other US territories have been allowed from 27 January, 2017 to levy a surcharge when the customers want to make the payment for their purchase through credit cards.

The businesses must limit the surcharge amount either to 4% of the purchase or the merchant discount rate for using credit card for the transaction, whichever is lower.

Further the business might not need any minimum purchase amount of more than $10 when transacted through Visa cards.

Additionally, merchants may not require a minimum purchase requirement of more than $10 for Visa transactions.

Mastercard Surcharge Statement

According to the US merchant Class litigation, MasterCard is working on modifying certain business policies and practices to enable US businesses to add an extra fee on the purchases of their customers when they make the payment through MasterCard-branded credit cards, which is also called a surcharge. The rule allowing for such fee changes will become effective from 27 January, 2017. It must be kept in mind that the changes aren’t effective on MasterCard-branded prepaid or debit cards.
